Department of Geography

                  The department runs the undergraduate course in Geography since 20 June 1975 while post graduate course in Geography since July 2004.
                  The Geography Department is located on the second floor of the main educational building. The staff of the department is highly qualified and with diverse interests in research. The atmosphere of the department is student centric and healthy. The department is dedicated to educate the students through various curricular, co - curricular and extracurricular activities. Study of Geography is highly allied to our day to day life and natural processes. This enables the students to understand the principles of Environment, Earth sciences, Life sciences and Agriculture. The students actively participate in organization of the workshops, seminars, exhibitions, film shows etc. The photographs taken by the students are displayed in the exhibition.
            Geography is the subject to be learned in field. The field visits are organized to explain various Geographical processes, natural and cultural environment, ecosystems such as forest, aquatic and grasslands. The field visits at Goa, Delhi, Agra, Hardwar, Saptshrungi-garh, Chankapur Dam, Saputara, Bhandardara, Murud-Janjira or Konkan part etc. have add in Geographical study tour.

The department aims to identify the potential of each and every student and develop his/her skills, accordingly create mutually beneficial partnerships between nature and education and to develop the technical and critical thinking skills necessary for success in the field. The student community at the department is friendly, enthusiastic and from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Several student activities are arranged through the year, to inculcate the extracurricular abilities in the students.
            Past students of this department are holding different position in different fields. Some of them are working as lecturers & teachers in senior, junior colleges & in schools also. Some of our students are working in the field of remote sensing & Geographical Information System.

Department of Geography has actively engaged in various activities with the help of student representatives in the following Programmes,

  • Paper cuttings & articles on recent environment & geography related issues are put on display board, students read them & discuss amongst them.
  • Slide shows, Film shows & PowerPoint presentations are arranged for the students, which help them in knowing different landforms & agricultural patterns.
  • The department arranges socio-economic & geographical surveys of the villages. Staff members explain the methodology. The intention of this type of fieldwork is to develop research ability in the students.
  • Department of Geography also arranges lectures of eminent personalities on different subjects related to geography.
  • Department arranges short & long tours for students, so as to expose them to natural environment. Students visit different places of geographical importance. In the field visit, different landforms are shown to them. While traveling, they are supposed to note down the various changes in the climate, relief, soil type, rock, natural vegetation, cropping patterns & identification of Physical features with the help of Toposheet, Aerial Photographs, Satellite images & GPS instrument. Students also visit different urban centers & study the urban patterns of development & their problems.

  • To provide quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • To provide access to the widest possible range of sources of knowledge.
  • To provide an environment in which all members of the department can enhance their skills and apply them to a wide range of theoretical and practical problems in the service of the wider community.

Objectives of the Department

  • To provide a broad understanding of the study of geography and of the works of the geographers.
  • To develop students abilities in field-based investigations of geographical phenomena.
  • To enhance the ability of students to present themselves in the labour market.

STRENGTH OF THE STUDENT

                   The strength of the students at the U.G. and P.G. level of the department has always been good and is steadily on the rise year after year. The students come from rural areas of the tahsil. Following is the strength of the students at the U.G level and P.G level. The Male/Female category is approximately 80% males and 20% females for U.G. level and 50% male and 50 % female for the P.G. level. The open and reserved categories are according to the university prescribed rules.

ACTIVITIES

The Department realizes its social responsibility and also the need for inculcating in the students awareness about environment and social issues. Keeping this in mind the Department also organizes several visits to natural and cultural environment.

Details of the departmental events:

  • 1) Students Seminar Participation

Most importantly the department has been active in organizing several programmes for the students and for the improvement of the teachers. The department has been engaged in undertaking several guest lectures, seminars as also discussions and study tours to enable the students to get a broader perspective on several matters.
We organized “One Day Workshop on Restructuring of S.Y.B.A./BSc and MA/MSc Part-II Geography syllabus” sponsored by University of Pune (BCUD) on Wednesday 05th March 2014.
Our students Ravi Ghuge, Gorakh Gore, Naresh Bhoye and Gangadas Harchandra Megha attend one day workshop on Conservation of Natural Resource and Social Awareness, organized by G. D. Savant College, Nashik on 7th March 2014.
The department also organized “One Day Group One Student Centric Workshop on Management of Water in Drought Prone Area  sponsored by University of Pune (BCUD) on Tuesday 11th March 2014.

  • 2) Student Projects

  Student’s Projects are encouraged to give the students a chance to conduct independent research Student participation in projects is secured.

  • M.A. Geography last year students involved a project of socio-economic condition in the village survey. Under this our students prepared a socio-economic village survey as per university guide line. Last year we select Pimperkhed village for this purpose.
  • Every year in Jan. organized State Level General Knowledge Competitive Examinations sponsored by Sonad Seva Prabodhini Pune.
  • Every year organized Geographical study tour for understanding the various geographical processes and human activities in different geographical areas.
  • 3) State Level Seminar organized by the department entitled 

“Indian Agricultural: Problems and Perspective”, date 2-3 Feb. 2013, sponsored by BCUD University of Pune.

  • 4) Apart from the co curricular activities the Department also takes an interest in organizing several extracurricular activities for the students. Extra Coaching for Competitive Examinations NET/SET AND MPSC AND UPSC
  • 5) Guest Lectures

Guest lectures are organized to give the students a broader perspective of the subject. Topics of contemporary relevance are selected. Here is just a sample list.

Conducts several visits for developing a broad orientation
Visits to places of Physical, Cultural, Social, Economic, Environmental interest. Study tours are conducted often to break the monotony of class room teaching and to get practical experiences.

  • 8) Analytical Writing 
  • Prof. P. Y. Vyalij writes Geographical Articles for Local Newspapers like Dinkar and Balekilla, Sakal, Lokmat.
  • The participation of the students was also ensured in the College Magazine.
  • Teachers day is celebrated by the students by felicitating the teachers to express their gratitude to them
  • Departmental picnics are organized to places like Ajantha and Ellora, Mahabaleshwar, Matheran, Goa and so on. This helps in developing an informal environment in the department which enriches teacher student’s dialogue.  
  • 9) Evaluation of Students
  • Internal Examinations are conducted through the centralized system
  • Weekly tutorials are undertaken by the respective teachers on aspects of the subject covered during that period
  • The centralized examination system does not allow the tutorial marks to be incorporated into the internal marks
  • Demonstrations’ by P.G. students also forms a basis for judging whether they have grasped the subject taught in the class. It gives training to the students who aspire to make teaching as their career.

                Apart from this the students are also involved (Through NSS/NCC/Sports) in several other activities by which they contribute to the society.
