About Mahatma Gandhi Vidyamandir

Late Shri. Karmaveer Bhausaheb Hiray a staunch freedom fighter, one of the pioneers in the formation of Maharashtra State and the Co-operative movement, an educationist and Ex.Revenue Minister of the then Bombay Province established 'Mahatma Gandhi Vidyamandir' and 'Advasi Seva Samiti' with an aim to educate the poor, needy and the downtrodden. He was inspired by the Sanskrit slogan 'Bahujan Hitay Bahujan Sukhay' which means 'if something good is done for the common people they become the happiest in the world'. These institutions particularly cater for the students from rural or tribal areas and are open for all irrespective of caste, creed, religion or community.

It was extremely difficult for students from rural and tribal areas to pursue primary and secondary education during pre-independence era. Bhausaheb Hiray himself had to struggle a lot for his own education. The great Maharaja of Baroda 'Shrimant Maharaja Sayajirao Gaikwad' generously provided educational facilities to Bhausaheb Hiray to complete his higher education. He realized the importance of education and then took lot of efforts to provide education for the masses and established educational institutes in Nashik, Thane and Khandesh area of Maharashtra State. He was greatly inspired by the philosophy and ideology of Mahatma Gandhi.

In 1945, he established 'Adivasi Seva Samiti' and started Ashram Schools and Boarding for the tribal 'Harijans', 'Girijans' and economically backward rural people. In 1952 he established 'Mahatma Gandhi Vidyamandir' with the devotional motto 'Bahujan Hitay Bahujan Sukhay'. It has been registered under Societies Registration Act 1860 (No. 2766 of 1951-52 Dated : 21/02/1952) and Bombay Public Trust Act 1950 (No.F-27 Dated : 23/08/1954) Recently, Department of Posts, Government of India issued a commemorative postage stamp on Shri. Bhausaheb Hiray for his contribution towards education for tribal people, Co-operative movement, fostering unity between Hindus and Muslims, launching of Koyna Dam Project and getting the 'Tillers Act' implemented.

After the sad demise of Karmaveer Bhausaheb Hiray on 6th November, 1961, his elder son Loknete Vyankatrao Hiray shouldered the responsibility of the institutions. His devotion, efforts and guidance gave rise to six new colleges along with a Law and B.Ed. College.

After his unfortunate and untimely demise in 1980, his wife Smt. Pushpatai Hiray a dedicated social worker continued and expanded his work with the same zeal.

M.G. Vidyamandir is today marching ahead from strength to strength under the able leadership of the General Secretary, Hon'ble Samajshri Prashantdada Hiray (Former Minister of State for Transport and Son of Late Shri. Vyankatraoji Hiray) assisted by his sons Dr. Apurva Hiray and Mr. Advaya Hiray His missionary zeal to enhance the quality of education from primary to the higher level has taken the management at its pinnacle. Mahatma Gandhi Vidyamandir and Adivasi Seva Samiti has to its credit 10 Primary Schools, 25 Secondary Schools, 3 Agricultural Schools and 1 English Medium School. The higher secondary level has 17 Junior colleges attached to senior colleges and one Training college for Primary Teacher (D.Ed.) with a training school for practice. There are 10 Arts, Science & Commerce Colleges (Senior) and 8 Professional Colleges.
